Elizabeth shifted, her ears hearing sounds, feet shifting on the wooden floorboards, doors closing, voices whispering, but her eyes refused to open.

“Elizabeth. Elizabeth. You’re safe. Please open your eyes.”

With every bit of effort she possessed, she forced them open. Blurry shapes appeared that swam disjointedly in front of her. She couldn’t focus. She rubbed her eyes, but her arms ached. She tried to sit, but the pain was unbearable. The room spun, dizziness threatening to overwhelm her.

Gentle hands pushed at her shoulders. “Don’t try to sit. You’re bruised all over.”

Everything rushed back when a man’s wide shoulders came into view. Fear choked her, and she whimpered. Pushing, she fought to get away. She had to run, she had to hide.

“Elizabeth, it’s alright. We’re only trying to help.” A woman’s voice pierced through the fear. Janie, the doc’s wife, appeared before her eyes.

“What, what happened?” Elizabeth asked.

“You were attacked. No one knows what happened, but Mr. Crockitt’s son saw a man strike you. Before he could get to you, you’d hit the wagon wheel and collapsed.”

“Where is he?”

“Who?”

“Him.” She couldn’t utter his name.

“The man who hurt you?” Janie frowned, but smoothed back Elizabeth’s hair. “The Marshal ran him out of town. No man like that is welcome here in Spring Creek.”

Relief surged through Elizabeth. She had time to get away. But where could she go? Her pa was here. If he found her, there was no telling what he’d do.

Trying again to push to a sitting position, Janie tried to stop her. Slapping her hands away, Elizabeth sat, but the room swirled, and her head exploded with pain. She had to get to the ranch, grab her belongings, and leave. Go somewhere far away. Putting her feet on the ground, she tried to stand, and promptly collapsed.

Janie knelt next to her. “Please, let us help. You need to stay here.”

Struggling against Janie, she fought. She had to leave. She wasn’t safe here. She wasn’t safe anywhere.

Doc Wilson promptly knelt next to her and placed a wet rag over her nose and mouth. She tried to fight him, but she lost as the medicine entered her lungs. She slid straight into oblivion. She wasn’t sure it was from the pain in her head, the fear in her heart, or from what she just inhaled. Regardless, blackness won.
